3D Partner’s Bourgueil & Anjou weekend - July 2015

Our talented and hardworking vignerons in the Touraine and Anjou regions of the Loire Valley were on sparkling form during our recent Partner event there.

 

We were based at the delightful La Croix Blanche Hotel besides the historic Fontevraud Abbeye where Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart are buried.

 

The splendid tastings began on the first night at the hotel with the ever-cheerful Jean-Albert Mary of Domaine de la Cune. He had lightly chilled his Saumur reds, and they tasted wonderful in the intense heat.

 

The following day we had an amazing visit to the organic and biodynamic Domaine de la Chevalerie in Bourgueil with the sparky Stephanie Caslot. She explained their work in the vines so well.  We then tasted wines from 2014 right back to 2002!

 

In the evening we dined in the epic cavernous Caves de Cochamtorille at La Jarnoterie in St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil.  Carine Rezé was typically poetic and elegant in her description of the wines we had with each course. It was a memorable evening.

 

The following day we travelled west to Domaine de la Salvert in the Anjou. Georges Bureau provided an unforgettable welcome and the warmest hospitality. Lunch was in a Troglodytic cave in the pretty village of Rochemenier, where we ate traditional fouées – an oven baked bread filled with rillettes and mushrooms and so on. All dishes were partnered with Georges’ refreshingly delicious whites, reds and sparkling wines.

 

There was more feasting in the evening back at the hotel. The sound of contented voices and new found friendships was a prefect end to a perfect few days in this very beautiful part of France.

 

I just wanted to thank you for organising such a wonderful event around the vineyards of the Loire.  As you know ,my last trip with 3D was to the Sancerre Foire Au Vins and Pierre Riffault’s “picnic” some 15 years ago and it is nice to be back in the fold!  …

 

Apart from all of the excellent wines and food, I thought our winemakers showed great passion and knowledge that they were clearly proud to share and it made for a very educational, as well as gastronimic, trip.  I think a highlight I will not forget is the lovely Steph at Chevalerie in Bourgeuil taking us all the way back through each year of her Busardieres to 2002.

 

Thanks also go to Debbie for her company and also all the organisation that makes a trip like that run so smoothly.
