The picturesque town of Sancerre, perched high on its hilltop above the vineyards, plays host to a delightful fair on the last weekend of August. The foire is held in the old mushroom caves – Cave de la Mignonne – below the town and comprises a colourful mixture of wine, food and craft stalls. All the main wine regions of France are represented, not just the Loire, and it is therefore an ideal opportunity to taste many wines.
We stay at Le Panoramic hotel, renowned for its spectacular views and outdoor swimming pool overlooking the vineyards.
The weekend starts with a stroll down to the foire, where we spend a few pleasurable hours, soaking up the atmosphere and sampling the wines (if desired).
In the evening we take a short walk into the centre of Sancerre to the delightful La Tour restaurant. The superb food is the perfect match for the stunning view over the vineyards from our upstairs dining room.
On Sunday morning, Pierre Riffault, our Sancerre winemaker at Domaine du Carroir Perrin, will meet us at la Maison de Sancerre where we learn about the history, the complex terroir and winemaking practices of this famous region. Pierre will then be our guide for a coach tour of the local vine-laden hills en route to his vineyard at Chaudoux. There we will enjoy a tour of their vineyard and cellar before treating us to a tasting of their wines and a gourmet picnic lunch in their garden.
